AstroBookReview: Starcrossed
I REALLY need to do more of these again. I am so behind on reviewing everything.
I will probably review this book for real and plot-wise on my book site since it's fiction, but I just wanted to comment here on the astrology bits. The narrator is an astrology buff and pays $150 a pop to visit a professional, and yet somehow is pretty well unaware of the nitpickier variants of astrology. Huh?
SPOILER ALERT: minor-ish plot detail will be dropped after this paragraph.
The boy tells her he's a Pisces, and she makes him go to her astrologer and get his chart done and their compatibility read. Since she's an earth sign and he's a water sign, supposedly they are just perfect together.
(Hell, I'm an earth sign and don't even want to date other earth signs, or any water sign other than another Scorpio. Why? Because I have five planets in fire and get kinda bored, that's why. My closest female friends are all air/fire signs! This is not to diss my Capricorn and Virgo guy friends, per se, but it's a different relationship. More mellow. Okay, back to the review.)
Well, except for the part where he lied to her and really he's a Sag. At which point she FREAKS OUT because her astrology book, and astrologer, told her to avoid Sags and that they are not compatible. (Plus her previous boyfriend the ex-con is a Sag, which I think has more to do with it.) Boyfriend resolves this by going back to the astrologer and getting his real chart done, and having the astrologer talk to the girl. The astrologer says that while yeah, it'd be better if he wasn't a Sag, she already loves the dude and he's a decent fellow. AND astrologically, there's hope, which she supposedly points out. I would presume she goes into the synastry/composite charts, which is kind of hinted at. No details about why, though, which annoys me. I know most people wouldn't get what the heck the astrology was talking about, but I think anyone who picked up this particular title would probably have astrology as an interest and would want to know! And I think people ought to know more other than "You're an earth sign, don't date the fire dudes."
I also find it interesting that she's a Capricorn, but really acts MUCH more like her boyfriend's sign, and vice versa. She's not an industrious worker by any means and likes to have fun, while he actually does work (and lines the two of them up with jobs, even). She really comes across as more of an air/fire type, and I bet she has more planets in those areas than in earth/water.
