Moon and home stereotypes in astrology

I get really, really annoyed at hearing, "The Moon in your chart is your mother, that's what your mother was like." Or alternately, "The Fourth House is just how your home life was like."

Um. NO. Not for me, anyway. My mother is not remotely Sagittarian when it comes to nurturing. Other than being talkative, that's about it. We didn't travel a lot, we were not an intellectual family, we were not weird (I have an Aquarian 4th house) in upbringing. My home was NOT free-wheeling or intellectual or roam-y. I came out like that, but nobody else was. So while that might be how I end UP, in a free-wheeling intellectual house, that's NOT where I come from. At all.

There are some who hold that the 10th house represents the mother and the 4th the father. My view is that the 4th represents the primary caretaker, male or female, and the 10th he or she who helped develop a world view and how to move in externals. Also the mother stuff isn't found only in the 4th house and moon signs but also the aspects of their rules, the houses and signs in which those rulers fall, etc. For example, a Cancer moon might suggest one had a maternal nurturing mother but if it's squared by Pluto or conjunct Saturn, that's a whole other spin.

As I mentioned in my response to your comment on SC, you can look at your natal Saturn, as it is the traditional ruler of your Aquarius IC.
