in Cancer. You've read about Cancers and know they are nurturing,
protective, moody and usually shy, yet also intensely creative and
intuitive. Yet this friend of yours doesn't seem to fit this description
at all. Instead of creating tantalizing dishes from her cozy kitchen
while complaining about her PMS to you on the phone, and having a
life centered on mothering her four children, husband, sister and
the neighbors, she's busy traveling the world, has three advanced
degrees (one in art history, one in philosophy and one in creative
writing) and refuses to get married and have children because she
believes it will restrict her freedom loving personality. This friend
always has a smile on her face and looks at the bright side of things.
That's not Cancer, is it? Well, maybe this friend could be better
understood once you realize that she has Sagittarius rising. Sadge
is all about truth seeking and higher learning. Sagittarius is fun
loving and has an intense need for freedom. This Cancer Sun friend
has an immediate soul purpose to nurture (Cancer) her own higher
learning and spiritual advancement (Sagittarius). What you don't
see on the surface is the fact that she may also be tremendously
insecure (Cancer) about her ability to learn (Sagittarius) or her
faith (Sagittarius). She is learning to nurture her faith. She is
also learning to have faith in her ability to nurture.

to Kataka in the Nightly Scopes. The e-mails are amazingly non-narky.
Okay, Cancer is Latin for Crab and the Crab is ONE of the symbols for
the constellation that the Sun travels through from late June to late
July. ie; if you born then, you are deemed “a Cancer.” Moon-Ruled, a
mood-swinger, a sexy empath, nostalgic, home-loving & a fiend in
biz. But the name has come to be more linked to oncological disorders.

I got a really emo yet lovely letter from a Cancerian girl writing
from her boarding school & I was about to send her back this
long-winded explanation. But then i just thought screw it & changed
the name of it. For her. She said that whenever she googles her sign,
it comes up with a disease and that it made her feel sad, sick and ugly
etc etc.

Sooo another symbol for this sign is the Ancient Egyptian sacred
scarab - symbol of immortality."

I have had issues with vocational astrology books. They tend to not be that helpful. I never got around to reviewing Vocations on here, but it was particularly bad for showing tons of examples and no way whatsoever to translate them into something I could apply to others. (I passed the book on to a friend of mine, who was even more baffled.)

I am happy to say that this one is pretty darned good. Clear to understand, gives examples and explains what they mean. Huzzah!

The "Slevin System" (to be honest, this makes me giggle a little, it sounds like some kind of huckster thing. Oh well, the author can't help her name) actually works pretty well for figuring things out for yourself.

Key points in the system:

Determine the sign and degree on the Midheaven.

Find the planet nearest to that degree in Ptolemaic (well, let's say exact) aspect within signs. This is your Principal Planet.

Note the PP's sign, strength, and direction.

Note the PP's house or if it's within 5 degrees of the next hours cusp.

Note the aspects the PP makes.

Note the house(s) the planet rules.

Note if the PP is conjunct/within a degree of the Cardinal Axis

Note if the PP is in mutual or mixed mutual reception with any other planets

Note if the PP is conjunct/within a degree of any Royal Fixed Stars.

Combine those factors to get a description of the personality, and define the strongest attributes for achieving success, notoriety, or the highest visibility.

Do this again with the planet nearest to the degree of the PP.

Note any planets in the tenth house

So, trying this out myself, I get:

Leo 8 degrees MC.

Planet closest to it is Mars in Leo at 5 degrees in the 9th house. No particular advantages or disadvantages. It squares the Sun/Chiron conjunction (The tying planet with Mars is Chiron at 5 degrees, square, but since this book doesn't go into Chiron, I'll just ignore this.) in the seventh. Sun is the ruler of Leo.

No fixed stars, no cardinal axis.

Leo midheaven = artistic pursuits, money, athletics, ambassadors, dignitaries. (Example: Princess Grace Kelly.)

Principal Planet conjunct the MC = "the fish are caught close to the market, with a brief and seemingly effortless return. The catch of the day is fresh, local, and readily available." If it's square, "the boat did not need to travel as far but the tide is against the fisherman on his return trip, and the motor on the boat had to work at full capacity to bring the catch in."

Mars as a PP = your boat is a speedboat, with fishermen who go off looking for sharks. Bunch of warriors. Example: guy who started a volunteering crime-fighting organization.

Not featured in the above system, but in the book, is a section on heredity. If you have Cancer/Capricorn emphasis or Moon/Saturn ties, you are bound to your family, like it or not, and can't escape. (Certainly sums up my life.)

But the part that makes me happy...

"In the Slevin System, the tried and true formula that indicates success in one's chosen field of endeavor is a specific aspect called the Boomerang. It occurs when:

The ruler of the Midheaven is in Ptolemaic aspect to the Midheaven.

Even if the ruler of the Midheaven is not the Principal Planet, if it is conjunct, trine, sextile, square or opposing the Midheaven within an orb of 8 degrees, success is a given in the Slevin System."

"Individuals with this extremely fortunate aspect are poster people for success. In the style of an express elevator, Fate enables them to reach the top, parting obstacles like the Red Sea, and remain in a penthouse of achievement. Their rank and public presentations can set the standard in their profession, and they often leave a legacy of notable success or notoriety." (Example: Katharine Hepburn.)

I totally have that, so YAY ME!

We've all got signs people just don't like, get along with. (Apparently with most of y'all, that would be Scorpios, but that's clearly not my issue!) Mine are Geminis and Cancers. Mainly because the Gemini friends I have had just dumped the hell out of me out of the blue- or periodically come back and dump me AGAIN. Really, what the hell? As for Cancers, home and family are the worst things in my life and my personal Kryptonite. Want to weaken me and try to destroy me? Lock me up at my mom's for the weekend. I don't know how Elsa didn't wring the neck of this guy. I cannot deal with someone whose lifeblood and soul are home and family, because I loathe that all so much. Okay, odds are they had better home and family than I did, but still, I feel like those areas of life have been poisoned for me and I will NEVER want to make one of my own.

Oh, speaking of today, I am SO not answering my phone.

I always claim to like "nitpicky" astrology books (i.e. not the ones that tell you that Tauruses like to eat and Virgos love to clean and that's it), and buying a title like this is about as nitpicky as I have ever gotten.

I mentioned earlier about reading Astrology of Intimacy, Sexuality and Relationship
by Noel Tyl, he who "rediscovered" the quindecile. Wanting to know more about this, I ordered the book his protege wrote on the subject.

I'd probably give it some like a B, were I to rate books around here. It's not a bad resource (pretty much the only one out there beyond the mentions in Tyl's books, so it's not like there are other options!), but it could be better.

The author mainly works in "code words", which are not my favorite thing ever because I tend to like more complicated (dare I say, nitpicky?) explanations for concepts. However, I do understand that some people love code words and that works great to give them a basic understanding of the combinations. So that's not bad, and there's a bit more explanation of the concepts in the back of the book.

Examples of the code word system she seems to use (and repeat frequently):

Scorpio = control, transformative ideas, regeneration

Taurus = tangible means

Cancer = all the people, family and people

Sagittarius = philosophies and belief systems

Uranus = disruption of the status quo w/intuitive ideas

Venus = aesthetics & kinship and collaboration

Jupiter = excess, expansion and growth

Neptune = sensitivity, illusive, imaginary, ideal

So me trying to put them together to figure out what my quindeciles mean translates into:

Uranus in Scorpio (disruption of the status quo through control)

Venus in Taurus (aesthetics and kinship through tangible means)

Neptune in Sagittarius (sensitivity with philosophies and belief systems)

Jupiter in Cancer (excess, expansion and growth within the family)

I don't know about you, but to me that's all kind of a mouthful to say, much less to really get a mental hold of.

It's slightly better in the back index:

"Venus (the need to cooperate and collaborate) quindecile Uranus (disruption of the status quo through unique and innovative ideas)- May be driven toward constant stimulation and excitement in one's relationships. May be sexually flirtatious and a risk taker. Can have trouble with intimacy and monogamous relationships. May be unpredictable and erratic in financial matters. Benefit comes through development of a unique sense of style and an intense focus on self-worth issues. May possess avant garde artistic talent that expresses one's style."

"Jupiter (excess, expansion and growth) quindecile Neptune (seeking the illusive, imaginary, and ideal)- May be driven by indulgences, addictions, escapism, and idealism. May use illusion or deceit to gain advantage. May be continuously dissatisfied because of a dream of the ideal. Benefit comes through the pursuit of one's spiritual philosophies and benefits. May be artistically sensitive and creative."

On the con side, she doesn't cover South Nodes, IC's, or descendants in this book. It seems odd to me to not mention them, given the heavy play she gives to their counterparts. She claims "not to be an expert on the South Nodes" and that is why she leaves them out. This irritated me. Honestly, it's not hard to learn about the one while you're doing the other. And I felt it was a weakness to leave these details out. (I will admit to being biased, since I have a quindecile with the IC and uh, would have been nice to have found out about that.)
