I have seen numerous other cases in which Chiron was prominent in the charts of people who were intellectual or spiritual leaders. Among our most recent charts I can mention Rollo May and Roberto Assagioli, both famous psychotherapists, who have Chiron conjunct their Ascendants within a one degree orb. Rollo May also has Vesta just over one degree from his MC. Another well-known but controversial psychotherapist, R. D. Laing, has Chiron in his first house opposite his Mercury. Werner Erhardt, founder of EST, which might be considered a controversial form of psychotherapy, has Chiron conjunct his Ascendant, though not as closely as May and Assagioli. But since Chiron squares his Sun and Venus (the latter exactly), and opposes his Moon, it is given additional emphasis. John Lilly, another prominent mind-explorer, also has Chiron opposite his Moon exactly, and it is sextile his exact Sun-Mercury conjunction. Still another mind-worker, Jose Silva, the founder of Mind Control, has Chiron widely conjunct his MC but exactly quincunx his 3rd house Sun and exactly semisextile Jupiter on one side and Moon on the other, Jupiter in the 9th house and Moon in the 11th. And Uri Geller, well-known mind-controller of material objects, has Chiron very widely conjunct his Ascendant but conjunct his East Point within 3 minutes of arc.
Among a variety of religious leaders in my files we can include the new Roman Catholic Pope with Chiron exactly trine his Jupiter-Neptune conjunction; Billy Graham with Chiron in 29 Pisces in his 12th house, exactly square his Sagittarius Moon and more widely square Mars and Pallas, exactly trioctile his Scorpio Sun, trine his Mercury, and quincunx his Saturn in Leo. A former Baptist minister who left the fold to become a psychic, Paul Solomon, has Chiron conjunct his Ceres-Sun-Antivertex in Cancer in the 11th house. Another formerly orthodox minister who moved into the psychic area has Chiron widely conjunct his Ascendant and square his Sun-MC conjunction. The founder of a new religion in Indonesia, Pak Subuh, has Chiron conjunct his Jupiter, opposite his Sun, and trine his Moon, though the orbs are wide. Three Hindu gurus with widely varying teachings and followers include Yogananda, founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship who had Chiron widely conjunct his Ascendant; Muktananda, current leader in the Shakti approach who has Chiron in his 10th house square his first house Sun; and Maharaj Ji, the young leader of mostly young followers who has Chiron trine his Ascendant and octile his Sun-Saturn conjunction.
I have also seen my share of tragic cases with Chiron, including Martin Luther King who had it conjunct Jupiter, with progressed Jupiter exact to the degree when he was killed. In two cases of suicide, one young man had Chiron conjunct his South Node in Pisces and opposite his Pluto and square his Sun, among other aspects, while the other young man had Chiron on his Vertex so opposite the Antivertex, as well as square his Neptune-Moon conjunction. And finally, Dean Corll who tortured and murdered a number of teenaged boys in Houston, Texas had Chiron conjunct his Antivertex.
If we think in terms of the Jupiter principle, we can see that its manifestation can range from “I am God and can do anything I want,” to “I am separated from God and faith and might as well give up and run away.” Or we may run to some supreme value. Chiron and Jupiter both may symbolize the need for freedom to pursue their quest wherever it takes them. (Jim Eshelman, author of the article on Chiron in our last issue, mentioned that he has now observed one connection of Chiron to relationships. He has noticed it in the gaining of independence through the breakup of relationships.) There are an impressive number of close aspects to angles, Sun, and Moon in even this brief sampling, suggesting that Chiron has considerable potential value as a clue to our search for ultimates and the dangers if our faith is misplaced or missing but the high potential if we are clear about what we trust and have our faith integrated with reality. I am not surprised to find it associated with death and with extreme criminality. Gauquelin found that the group having the highest percentage of Jupiter near the Ascendant was the Nazi leaders. I have personally always seen an aspect to Jupiter at an individual’s death, natural or otherwise. It may mean simply a trip to a higher level of life or a supreme effort to escape misery in this life. In the end, it is our faith that determines the way we go in life. Take a good look at your Chiron. It is no accident that the universe has given it to us at this time. The faith by which we live will be a decisive factor in the days ahead, maybe the decisive factor on whether we learn to share the resources of the planet or we wipe out the mess and start over, here or elsewhere.
Then there's the usual cookbook stuff: house and sign placements and aspects.
"Is it going to be easy or comfortable to do these things? Probably not; but hey, it's better to climb this mountain than keep feeling the pain of hydra's poison (in her case, a shame about not having gone to college or pursued advanced education of some kind) all of our life. This is not just about math, but about all of the small thinking and limiting beliefs from the past we have about ourselves that bind our lives and cause anxiety and frustration."
I have that one, and that is exactly how it plays out. I don't believe too many people will do something or give me something if I have to ask for it.Chiron-Mars. The ability to assert ourselves and our desires, and to express anger, come into play with Mars. With Chiron in hard aspect to Mars, we are somehow ashamed of expressing our desires directly and confidently. Perhaps we don’t expect our desires to be met. My friend has a child who would rarely ask for anything from his parents directly. Instead, he would convince his sisters to ask his parents for what he wanted. Although mostly even-tempered, he would sometimes have huge angry outbursts with tears following the outbursts–nothing violent or alarming, but nevertheless choppy. When asked by his mother why he always seemed to enlist the help of a sibling to ask for something that he wanted, he replied that “you wouldn’t do it if I asked”. The mother didn’t think that was true, but the issue here is that it is a personal reality for him–that’s how he perceives things.
True dat.
Another child I know who has Mercury conjunct Chiron in Libra (and widely opposing Saturn) asked why it seems that every time she has the courage to state her opinion on something, it seems to completely backfire. She feels that others around her can easily express an opinion without negative feedback, but when she says something even slightly provocative, it’s met with raised eyebrows. So it’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing, and can very much be a vicious circle. If we’re scared of expressing ourselves, when we do summon up the courage to do it, it can come out either too aggressively or too emotionally–unnaturally–and is thus somehow ineffective. This then feeds the very feeling of ineffectiveness that is at the root of the unnatural expression.
With Sun-Chiron in hard aspect, there can be a feeling of embarrassment following a Sun-style expression of “shining”–of strutting your stuff.
I don’t think crying spontaneously is necessarily a signature of Moon-Chiron, but there is a deep emotional sensitivity there that is unmistakable and expressed in different ways. Similar to the outbursts of temper with hard Mars-Chiron I mentioned above, one of the challenges of hard Moon-Chiron aspects is to express the emotions naturally and evenly, instead of holding onto them in fear, bottling them up, until emotions come out in a dramatic moment, after which there is embarrassment and awkwardness. With Moon-Chiron, we can have a real feeling that others don’t care about our emotions, but this feeling is on some level self-fulfilling. It’s the vicious circle thing again. Holding onto your feelings to the point that when you express them, it comes out as an outburst, is baffling to others. They don’t know how to react, and this feeds the feeling of ineffectiveness or lack of validation that caused the pattern.
Chiron - Sun: In positive aspects, Sun and Chiron combine to create harmony, empathy and understanding in the native. A positive self-image can be enhanced by beneficial contacts. The harsher contacts can bring out rage, anger and frustration stemming from a lack of self-worth or a blow to the ego. It can be hard for the individual to express their inner needs, ideas, and emotions when Chiron is adversely affected in transits. Positive Sun-Chiron contacts in the natal chart can indicate profound depth and a good self-esteem build at an early age. If the natal Chiron has stressful aspects, they can find that the years before mid-life are difficult, that they have to struggle to assert themselves. Their can be frustration and resentment related to their position in life.
Chiron - Mars: If you want to discover the true meaning of the old phrase "immovable object meets irresistible force", get in between this native and some goal they have in mind. This placement can be described as the sacred warrior archetype. They are not afraid to pick up the sword in defense of others, and can be drawn to military careers. Energy and intuition come together with a strong drive to take action, to accomplish demonstrable goals. In early life, they may feel that their personal desires were challenged continually, so they fight hard for their desires. They do not count on others to come to their rescue. These people tend to take on leadership positions, but can become dictators if the placement is challenging. If their desire to lead is thwarted, they can become bitter and petty.
Chiron - Jupiter: Chiron together with Jupiter lends itself to creative abilities and these people do tend to have something of a "magic touch", especially those with strong contacts to Leo or the 5th house. Excellent teachers and healers, they are bright, lucky and talented when the two planets aspect in harmony, but when they are stressed, the native is often challenged by their own high expectations for themselves and others. Religious and spiritual intolerance can become a problem as they tend to see their own beliefs as "universal".
So I'm taking Elsa's beginner astrology class, and I figured I'd mention a few of the posts I did over there.
The point of the class is to talk about Suns and Sun house placements ONLY. (I feel like I have every limb but like, one big toe tied behind my back not to go advanced on this. We have a lot of advanced folk taking the class because Elsa is cool, but we're getting told not to go into much beyond that.) One of the points made somewhere was that where your sun is is where you are supposed to SHINE and if you don't, it's a big ol' problem.
So, here was my total whining about it:
I have a question regarding this quote about not letting your Sun shine = massive dysfunction: what about the 7th? The entire problem is that I don't have control over whether or not I get a partner and the sun gets to shine. Yeah, I could and should force myself to online date (though at this point I'd rather pine alone or shoot myself than do it, I feel sick to my stomach every time I look at the ads, they're all terrible!) because I have no other options for meeting people at this age short of lightning striking. But even if I meet someone and there's mutual liking, I can't control how long someone wants to stay with me and I don't have any power over that. All my power is gone because someone else has to hand it to me.
I hate being astrologically codependent. I hate it SO much.
See, it's totally frustrating. I have to have someone else's wind beneath my wings before I can fly? WTF? I can't make my own wind? I have to sit on the ground for years waiting for someone to come along and decide that they wanna inflate me? Grrrrr. That is just SO disempowering. It's what pisses me off about that placement, that you are NOT ALLOWED to go it alone and like it or function independently. (Says the Aries South Node.)
Someone asked me about projection issues and here's what I came up with. I'm actually fairly amazed at my insight on this. Not so much that I project onto actual people...
I am pretty much only satisfied with a partner, but on the other hand, DRAMA comes along with partners. They have problems with what I do and they tell me and I get upset and can't ever manage to "fix it" to their satisfaction, I have problems with what they do and don't tell them because I can't bear for the relationship to end, eventually they get sick of me and dump me... Partnership really isn't a cure-all or something that "fixes" me, but I think when you have personal planets on the descendant, you're going to be inclined to think that this will be the cure-all even when your rational mind knows better. I think that's my projection, that I can't be happy alone and it's better to be with a loser than to be alone, even though my rational mind learned that isn't true the hard way :P My mom has moon in 7th and I got raised this way as well.
So as far as I'm concerned, the projection thing kind of happens even without an actual person to project onto. Now, you might have to tie my Sun conjunct Chiron into it, i.e. Chiron is where you are broken and I just feel broken in general, and maybe those without it don't feel that way. But on some level, EVEN THOUGH I MENTALLY KNOW BETTER BY NOW, and learned that the hard way, my hormones/limbic brain/id/what have you is darned convinced that "get a man and it fixes everything." (Michael Lutin seems to think this if you read SunShines, which makes me wonder what the hell his node placement is. He very specifically says that your personal issues of self-hatred go away if you have some other person around to interrupt the self-hate chanting you do when alone.) And in real life practice, no it doesn't. Hell, that causes even more problems!
Anyway, the answer to the question of "is my Sun shiny" is nope, no it is not.
You may recall yesterday when I was talking about this book and mentioned the Chiron is an unfixable wound thing.
Well, that night I was in a car with a friend of mine whose life is going to crap. She's got a bad family situation that she is utterly trapped in, and on top of that, her job has gone to hell due to a crazy, unpleasable boss. She is the butt monkey there and that's all there is to it. She's pretty well near nuclear meltdown and is fed up with her current career, but cannot afford to lose her job because there's kids and a husband who's job hunting.
The first half hour or so that I see her is just kind of post-work meltdown time, and during that she was saying that she thought she was just broken and unfixable and there's no way to fix yourself. That she used to think if you prayed hard enough and did enough work on yourself to figure out why you were broken, that you could fix it. Except the prayer never worked and just because you know how you got broken doesn't mean that you know how to fix it.
I knew her birth date but was all, "What is your birth year?", because I HAD to go check her Chiron placement. She is not so much into the hippie crap as I am, so I didn't say anything much about astrology specifically, but I wanted to.
Well, she's got a stellium in Pisces opposing the Uranus/Pluto conjunction. And she's got the Sun and Saturn and Chiron all next to each other. As a Sun Chiron person, I related.
Wounded, indeed. Poor girl. I worry about her, but I don't see any way to fix her life either.
It starts out as a rundown of the basic astrology, with discussion of certain angles and asteroids (I particularly liked her Juno, Chiron and Persephone writeups), and discusses one person's chart and how she'd treat it in a reading. Relationships and career in the horoscope are discussed.
But the kicker with me, seeing as I am one of these people is...she talks about how do you deal with people with really hard charts, who want something with all their hearts and have nothing but resistance in their charts to getting it?
Points she makes that I like:
- Don't ask will you get married, ask what do you need in a relationship that will make you happy, and can your current partner provide that? Also, what is your capacity to do relationships well and can you sustain interactions with others?
- If all of their indicators are unfavorable for something, encourage the development of other parts of their life. If it's a mix, relationships will be good and bad/difficult, but you can identify where the problems will emerge. What's at cross-purposes with your desires?
- Chiron is an unfixable wound. How do you deal with it? Are you supposed to be a healer? (In my chart, apparently YES, but I don't feel that urge.) Maybe you are supposed to learn personal knowledge of a condition so that you can help others.
- Likewise, Persephone-issue people might be called to deal with going into the darker side of the psyche.
- What is the best expression for the greatest good that I can do given these circumstances? How can I best use the situation, NOT for what I want or what I think will make me happy, but for what realizes the chart?
- What is being asked of you instead of realization of what you want?
- Reframe/spin the situation to get a different perspective.
- Make peace with not getting what you want, focus on what the chart does say you'd be successful at.
- Help others with their suffering.
Hmmmmmmmmmm."You may think it unlikely that this person will find happiness and peace with a partner who is gentle, kind and appreciative. Yet it is the topic of relationship that guides his life, and the thought of not being in a relationship is untenable to him. How can you reframe these chart indicators to make sense of his predicament? The counselor in you might speculate that he may have taken on a karmic commitment (ruler of seventh in the twelfth) to women who are filled with inner rage towards men due to their own previous circumstances (his Venus in Aries in the seventh). Because he is secure enough in his own inner strength, he is able to withstand their tirades and give them unconditional love, commitment, continual help, and emotional support to bring some healing into their lives. Everyone can benefit from and heal by being loved, and it may be that he is able and willing to extend this compassion to a type of woman who needs it very much. The question here is how to find peace with a situation a person is unable or unwilling to change by viewing it in a way that affirms the higher impulses of the individual."
Anyway, I'd recommend this book.
So, I got to meet a local celebrity from my hometown the other day. It was great fun- he's known for having the blingiest house at Christmas you have ever seen, and I got to tour the house. Huzzah!
So as I'm reading his website later, he happened to mention his birthday (the day before mine! Wow, I know a lot of April 23rd birthdays), AND the place of birth and time!
Yeah, I had to look.
He's a double Taurus (shopping, shopping), with a Sag moon (like me, hah), and URANUS RISING! That just cracked me up big time. He's in a very hierarchical profession/religion, but has the big ol' Sign of the Weirdo right front and center. With a north node in Leo (flashy!) in the fourth house...yes, he has a flashy house. (Interestingly enough, Chiron is conjunct the NN. I wonder what that means to him to do a flashy house with that aspect.) He's also a Venus Saturn person...a Catholic deacon sworn to celibacy.
Amusingly enough, my mother told him the next day that I'd seen we had nearby birthdays and he was all, "Taurus! Stubborn, likes to shop..." Believe me, if you've seen his house, you KNOW that. He must be really fun to go shopping with. Huh, I should meet the man more often. :)
