So, as someone I know was telling me about how she had a lot of stuff go down around her fiftieth birthday (including meeting/dating her future husband), I had to wonder what was going on astrologically there.
Looking at the transits, the main one that stands out to me is that she was having transiting Uranus (ruler of 7th) on her natal Mercury (and her husband is a Gemini) in the 8th, also trine her natal Saturn in the fourth and semisextile her natal moon. Transiting Pluto in the fifth was squaring her natal Venus. Transiting Jupiter (ruler of 5th) was opposite her sun. Transiting Neptune is in her seventh, sextile Mars in fifth. By the time she got married Uranus was transiting more towards being conjunct her Sun rather than the Mercury, and transiting Mars was conjunct her Venus.
Progression-wise, around her fiftieth she had the progressed moon in her fifth house conjunct Chiron, and the progressed ascendant/descendant axis was conjunct her natal sun on the descendant end.
Reading Mystic Medusa (not a permalink) and stumble across this bit:
Out of curiosity, I checked...and that was happening right when I met Older Ex. So not only did we have Saturn conjunct Sun with our natal synastry, it was happening when we met too. Ouch."Saturn crossing the Asc or Dsc tends to coincide with a Significant Relationship..."

If something big doesn't happen this weekend (or week of), I will probably have to eat a hat. Seriously. This is apparently a whole lotta romance shit.
I'll be running around the Bay Area that weekend, so who knows what will happen?
"Saturn Transits Through Your Tenth House: Saturn transits give us the results of our past actions. The 10th House rules our career, public image and standing, the boss, and the goals of our life. Well, you will be able to tell if your life is on the right track. Any lingering problems with supervisors, or career matters in general, will tend to surface now. Any moves you should have made but didn’t, well, now is the time when you will probably say: “I should have.” Saturn passed over the top of Bill Gate’s horoscope when the justice department was readying the anti-trust suit against Microsoft. Chickens coming home to roost. Gates didn’t figure that he would be so good at competing that everyone else would band against him. His “Take no prisoners” attitude gave them little choice. On the positive side, if you planned your work and worked your plan, this is harvest time and Saturn will help you to reach a peak. However, you will still have to work hard to stay there! No time for rest. And be careful that you don’t devote All of your time to career. Other areas of your life could suffer, like family and friends. Make an effort to maintain some balance here.
Saturn Transits in Aspect to the Natal Moon: The Moon is your emotions and feelings, your instincts. Saturn rules depression, especially the stressful aspects (conjunction, square, and opposition). But there is always a way to minimize that. Keep busy, especially around the house. Don’t just sit there. Check the house that the Moon is in and the house that Saturn is moving through. These are areas of your life where normal problems can seem particularly depressing right now. For instance, if you are born with the Moon in the 3rd House, a stressful angel from transiting Saturn could bring up problems with siblings or neighbors. Since the 3rd House also rules communications and transportation, those areas could be affected as well. Maybe you have to do some public speaking and have a panic attack. Or if you have to buy a new car, you may suddenly feel sad about having to give up the old one. In any event, your reaction will tend to be more emotional at this time, rather than logical. And, oh yes. Relations with women tend to be difficult during these transits. This goes for everyone. Not just men. The best way to deal with these transits is to acknowledge the feelings you have. Do not suppress them. Then, check the reality of the situation. You will probably notice that your emotional reactions are out of proportion to what is happening. Take the rational course, of course. Do the right thing. But then, give yourself a little treat to soothe those emotions. Ice cream usually works for me. The harmonious aspects (the sextile and trine) are usually a better time for dealing with all matters concerning home and real estate. In fact, since your emotions are less likely to conflict with rational needs at these times, it becomes easier to deal with just about anything. The areas of your life ruled by the house the Moon was in when you were born can also be affected. And don’t forget to check the house that has the sign of Cancer (ruled by the Moon) on the cusp.
Saturn Transits in Aspect to Natal Venus: Venus is the planet of love and happiness. When Saturn transits with a stressful aspect to your natal Venus, problems in intimate relationships will tend to surface, as well as with money. That’s what all the books tell you. What they don’t say is that you can also have difficulties with other areas of your life. Check the houses that have either Libra or Taurus on the cusp (beginning). If, for example, you are born with the sign of Libra on the cusp of your 6th House (work and co-workers) and Saturn transits with a stressful aspect (conjunction, square, or opposition) to your Venus, you could have difficulties with your co-workers, or loose your job. All this while you are being extra careful with your love life, because that’s what the astrology books said! You have to check the house that Venus is in as well. If it is in the 4th House, for instance, you could have extra expenses connected with your home, or difficulties with a parent. Remember, Saturn transits tend to bring problems to the surface. If you have loose ends in any area that Saturn hits, it cuts them off. As always, plan ahead. See where Saturn is going to hit, and take care of potential problems well in advance. If you happen to work in the arts, Saturn transiting in stressful aspect to your natal Venus could indicate a dry spell when your inspiration takes a vacation. Conversely, inspiration could be as strong as ever, but circumstances may prevent you from producing. The harmonious aspects (the sextile and trine) are usually quiet, stable times in relationships and financial matters. These periods are usually not too important. Saturn has its biggest effects during the stressful transits.
Saturn Transits in Aspect to Natal Uranus: Uranus rules our urge for independence and innovation. Saturn makes for restriction. It’s not that obstacles to your hopes and wishes suddenly appear. Most likely, they’ve been there all along. When a stressful aspect (conjunction, square, or opposition) from transiting Saturn hits your natal Uranus, you start to notice them. You now have two apparent choices: give in and be depressed, or rebel and risk disaster. Naturally, no matter which planet you choose to follow, the other one will “get you”. But there is a solution. You have to mix the traits of both planets at the same time. Make far-reaching changes in your life now (Uranus). But do it in a well planned, orderly, and structured way (Saturn). Don’t expect the changes to be either quick or easy. You have be prepared to stay there for the long haul. One caution. Don’t try to do too much. Under Saturn transits, we sometimes try to work 25 hours a day, and eight days a week. A little rest every now and then won’t kill you. As usual, the harmonious aspects (trine and sextile) from transiting Saturn are easier to deal with. Changes can be made more smoothly when these hit. The problem with the harmonious aspects, however, is that they don’t have the same sense of urgency as the stress aspects. We can feel too comfortable and not get anything done. Be sure to check the houses that Saturn and Uranus rule in your birth chart. These are the ones that have either Capricorn or Aquarius on the cusp (beginning). The tensions and need for change can affect you in the areas ruled by those houses, as well as the house where Uranus is located and the house that Saturn is transiting through. For example, if you are born with Uranus in your 5th House and transiting Saturn is making a square aspect to it from the 2nd House, it may be time to save for your kids’ college education (5th House rules children and 2nd House rules money) or to join gamblers anonymous (5th House rules gambling and speculation as well)."
"Uranus Transits Through Your Fifth House: If you’re a parent, your kids may seem extra rebellious to you at this time. They may really not be that way, but they will seem so to you. If you’re dating, you will be attracted to people who are weird, unusual, independent, maybe even a bit shocking. Maybe there will be a great difference in your ages. Or they could just be the type of person that you would have never even considered going out with before. This transit can attract you to people who are geniuses, eccentric, or a bit crazy.
Uranus Transits in Aspect to Natal Uranus: A tendency to make changes just because you want to make changes. Control yourself. Actually, the harmonious aspects (the sextile and trine) can be pleasant and constructive. You start to get interested in new things and people. You horizons broaden. As always, be sure to check the house that Uranus occupies in you birth chart, as well as the house where the sign Aquarius is located. These will indicate the areas of greatest change."
"Neptune Transits Through Your Fourth House: Not the best transit if you want to buy a house or do any real estate deals. Neptune tends to cause confusion wherever it goes. Under Neptune transits, we are more likely to see what we want to see instead of what is really there. It also leads us to make excuses.
Neptune Transits in Aspect to Natal Neptune: Your imagination increases with any contact between transiting and natal Neptune. Don’t let it run away with you. This transit can also activate your compassion for others, as well as increase the chance that it will be misplaced and misused. A good time to do some volunteer charity work. A bad time, a VERY bad time, to try to “save” someone yourself. Send them to a therapist, social worker, or some other professional. What is you are a professional in those fields. Then just remain detached as much as possible while you are helping people. If you start to get personally involved with any of them at this time, well that’s bad news. Send them to another professional."
"Pluto Transits Through Your Second House: Watch your money and possessions, especially if transiting Pluto makes stress aspects (conjunction, square and opposition) with any of your natal planets while it is going through this house. Stressful aspects from Pluto tend to destroy things. Sure they can be built back later, but first, they have to hit bottom. Watch out, in particular, for temptation to make money by less than honest means. Pluto Transits in Aspect to Natal Saturn: The stressful aspects can make you believe that everything you need for safety and security is being destroyed. To some extent, this is true. Mostly though, it just feels that way. Saturn is the planet of fear. Pluto brings it out. Fortunately, Saturn also rules persistence and discipline and Pluto can activate those things as well. This can be an excellent time to start a long-term program of change. Want to do over your house? How about a weight reduction or work-out program? This can be a great time for things like that. In fact, circumstances may force you in those directions. When it comes to either Pluto or Saturn, don’t wait until they push you."
Eric Francis (not a permalink):
"Dear Eric,
My first Saturn return is happening right now but stuck inside I still feel what feels like a void between my previous life and what's to come. Could this be due to Jupiter still being in my 12th house and, if so, is it more appropriate to make changes after it has moved into the first house?
Or should I just try harder to move on? I'm struggling with how to meet the challenges of my Saturn return appropriately within what feels more like true emptiness of direction than lack of motivation. I am not clear about how to balance the significant Pluto, Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus transits I am experiencing either. Thank you!"
"Thanks for writing. I get the feeling from your chart that this whole theme you're discussing comes down to self-confidence, and moreover, having a tangible sense of self: a self that can live in the world, choose and experience. This takes feeling solid in your heart and soul, or embarking on a journey to get there, which is pretty much inevitable in life. Often that means letting go of your old expectations and beliefs about yourself and, in your particular situation, using your imagination.
You have so many transits happening; the only reasonable astrological advice is to come all the way from your core and really, merely, as directly as you can, be yourself every moment. If you're not sure who that is, experiment. The world is not exactly tailored for people to do this, and there are all kinds of factors that can make it difficult, but you have the moxie to do it. For you, with Venus in Aquarius, I would definitely say that life is about doing rather than thinking, though Venus can keep you in mental mode when what you really want to do is take action.
However, as much as all the lore and legends of astrology say that Saturn returns are a time of enormous change and progress, ultimately we have to be patient with the process. It is true that there are some transits where it's possible to accurately predict an effect to the day. There are circumstances when I've seen Saturn transits be rather astonishingly precise.
Generally, though with transits of Saturn, Chiron and other slow-movers, you need to think in terms of the seasons and years of the transit, and those around it, and not any one day, week or month. Saturn is a planet whose themes include long phases of time, and time itself. Saturn always rewards patience. But when Saturn says it's time to make a move, it most certainly is time, seemingly all at once.
The Saturn return is one of those before and after kinds of transits. When working with a client who's gone through it a long time ago, I will often make the discussion easy and ask, using the year of the transit's main focus, what was your life like before and after? They will think for a moment, and then the story will be interesting. Hearing several of these stories help me understand the ways in which a client tends to relate to their transits. I find this to be useful in counseling current transits.
It's a bit different working with someone in the midst of the Saturn return. After checking some recent transits, what I would want to hear about is what are the situations and choices you're facing right now. Often we don't see the most obvious ones. In terms of counseling technique, it's also reasonable to start with this approach. However, the journey of the past seven years (since the Saturn square) counts for a lot in the discussion of the Saturn return. It's also sensible to look at the events surrounding age 14 for clues.
As for what you state about your life in general: I think that 'stuck' can be a pretty good descriptive term, but then we would need to slowly parse out the particulars. These would involve your specific relationships, your current work as it relates to your larger plan, and how you feel about your current location on the planet. These are generally the big themes.
More than "expecting something to happen," I would propose that the Saturn return is a time to reconsider everything, and make decisions where you see choices. If you don't see choices, the quest then becomes one for those. These may be as much about what you opt against as much as what you opt for. With the Saturn return, there can be a phase of undoing that is followed by a phase of effort, after which the results gradually rise above their foundations.
I have to say, reading farther on (which I'm not pasting here), her life sounds like it has the potential to be really fun. I'm kinda jealous if she can pull it off.
I was also kind of interested in the letter after that:
"For the past year and a half, the whole world seems to be on fire. Everyone around me seems to be going through, or has gone through, a major personal crisis in which their lives have been turned upside down. For me, it hasn't stopped with one episode. It has been quite a rippled effect; once one situation is handled, another comes along to test my strength. I am constantly putting out fires all around me. I am typically very optimistic and proactive and I try to surround myself with positive energy. Does Saturn have anything to do with this negative energy and when will it all lighten up?"
"However, speaking of on fire, I think you are what is doing the most burning. There is fire coming in from every angle of your chart, from your ascendant (Leo) through your 12th house (Pallas, Mercury and Mars), as well as your hot Aries Moon and laser-beam Aries Chiron in the 9th house, and Neptune glowing like cosmic fire in Sagittarius. This adapts you excellently to handling crisis, while at the same time, the fact that three exceptionally potent planets -- Mars, Mercury and Pallas -- are in your 12th house may keep them hidden from your view or easy access for creative use.
The result could be that you're investing a lot of your creative energy into solving problems rather than applying yourself to some generative process. It's very difficult to be an innovator when all you're doing is solving problems (putting out fires rather than getting them going). You may need to make some radical turns in your life in order to get a handle on things -- that is, to take control of your energy and put it to work for you."
Okay, so I don't live in Qatar like this person apparently does(!), but yeah, I sure as fuck feel like a fireperson. And I do have most of my planets in fire. I guess that explains a lot.
Back to something I noticed from the first letter: i thought it seemed a little odd to have that much shit going off at once, but checking transits for me at the start of fall...oh, fuckity, I shoulda known better than to think that, huh?
I've got transiting Pluto trine Saturn going on. Eeek. And transiting Neptune conjunct natal Neptune. And transiting Jupiter conjunct natal Uranus, transiting Venus quincunx natal moon, transiting north node quincunx natal Saturn. In addition to the various other stuff going off with Uranus and the moon and whatnot.
That first weekend just looks FUCKING INSANE. Saturn and Uranus and Jupiter and moon wacky in particular.
I am scared of the fall.
